ABSTRACT

This search work is designed to make an in depth study of the impact of conflict managements it relates to organization performance. The research is a case study of all Burton Nigeria Ltd and simple random sampling technique was employed to select few departments in the organization for the study. The research adopted the use of questionnaire to gather responses from respondents. Table and simple percentage were used to analyze the data gathered and chi-square was used to test the hypothesis. The analysis showed that conflict management has a significant relationship on organizational performance. It was also discovered that conflict is inheritable in any human undertaken. The search further showed that conflict is not good nor bad it is neutral. It is how we manage it that is important. Based on the finding, it was recommended that managers should note that reducing or eliminating conflict is not necessarily equated with more effective management. Conflict in contemporary organizational setting can also be healthy and in some cases, the modern designs may actually try to promote conflict to benefit the organization.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In recent times, organization are operating in a turbulent environment and are searching for measures that will allow them improve their performance and competitiveness (Dodd, 2003). Conflict generally is regarded as disagreement regarding interests or ideas (Esquivel and Kleiner, 1997). In addition, conflict management is the process of limiting the negative aspect of conflict while increasing the positive aspect of conflict. The aim of conflict management is the enhance group outcome which include performance in corporate settings. (Rahim, 2002, P.2, 08), conflicts are inevitable part of organizational life since the goals of different stakeholders such as managers and staff are often incompatible (Jones et.al, 2000).

Conflicts commonly arise when employees interact in organizations and compete for scare resources. Employees in various organizations organized into manageable groups in order to achieve common goals; therefore, the probability of conflicts to arise is very high. Nowadays, most serious conflict makes headlines in the newspapers, which might affect the public image of the company and also reduce employee performance. Conflicts have both negative and positive outcomes to the individual employee’s and the organization at large. The managing of conflict can lead to positive organizational change and increased performance in terms of utilizing scare resources and achieving the organizational objectives.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

The conflict managements it relates to organization performance and strategic to the survival of the organization. It is one of the keystones to the success and indeed the very existing of the organization. The conflict organisation function of obtaining, organizing, maintaining, supervising, developing, training and initializing human and material resources in ganging degrees towards, the achievement of the objectives cannot be over emphasized.

In the course of conflict organisation made about incompetent performance by workers at all levels, this may result from infrastructural facilities and also mordent. The resultant is emotional, instability and low moral. When the environment is adverse and unfavourable, it tends to have effect on the conflict organisational performance. Additionally, the matters a lot because unfavourable environment produces poor conflict.

This project work is therefore meant to ascertain the effects of poor conflict organisational performance.

1.3   PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to examine the impact of effective conflict management on organizational performance.

Other objectives are:

  1. To ascertain the extent the impact of effective conflict management has on organizational performance.
  2. To examine the relationship between effective conflict management and organizational performance
  3. To identify the challenges facing effective conflict management on organizational performance
  4. To make recommendations as solution to the challenges identified.
  5. To examine the strategies to be used in resolving conflict in given conflict solution.

1.4   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study will be useful to conflict managements and organization performance. Also, the result of the study would help to enhance the physical environment of workers.

This study will not only provide direction and goals, but will also give an indebt understanding of the concept of performance as linked to the environment and its importance t achieving the organization goals. It hoped that this study will examine the impact of conflict managements it relates to organization performance and solutions proffered will help the management of an organization provide conducive work environment to enhance the conflict management.

1.5   RESEARCH QUESTIONS

At the back of every researcher’s mind are certain guiding questions that need to be asked in order to find answers to the purpose of the study. It is in line with this that the following questions are asked.

  2. What are the potential sources of conflict in contemporary organizations?
  3. What are the consequences of conflict situation on organizational         performance?
  4. What are the strategies to be used in resolving conflict in a given conflict situation?
  5. What is the relationship between effective conflict management and corporate performance?

1.6   SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study has to do with the conflict management on corporate performance despite other factors that might have significant impact on corporate performance. The research work is a case study of Halliburton Nigeria Ltd.

1.7   DEFINITION OF TERMS

The following terms are defined as used in this research work:

Conflict:          The discord that occurs when the goals, interest, or      values of different individuals or group are      incompatible.

Corporate: A separate legal entity that has been incorporate through a legislative or registration process        established through legislation.

Discord:  Disagreement between people, group or thing.

Goals: A desired result a person or organization plans and commits to achieve.

Management: The act of planning organizing, directing and controlling the efforts of people to accomplished desired goals and objectives.
