1.0     INTRODUCTION

1.1     GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE TOPIC

The reformation in information technology has transformed the way in which information on shipments and goods in the warehouse are processed and distributed. A warehouse stands empty without some form of products. The goods are received, processed and then sent to the warehouse for storage. To maximize space within the facility, products are placed on pallets which allow for more consistent stacking and moving within the facility. A crucial aspect of warehouse is inventory control. Inventory control is the ability to locate and track and a given product within the warehouse to facilitate quick selection and loading for order fulfillment. It can also be seen as the process of maintaining a sufficient amount of products to meet customers’ demand while balancing the expense of keeping products in storage.

In the past, warehouse management was very paper-intensive in its coordination of multitude of activities. This has changed with the advent of warehouse management software, an aspect in e-logistics of warehouse management. The warehouse management software assists the managers in tracking products throughout the entire storage and distribution process. These systems span from simple computer automation system to high-ends feature rich management program that improve order picking, facilitate dock logistics and monitor inventory management.

With e-logistics application in a warehouse, questions like “where is my shipment at the moment?”, “how much will the cargo cost me and where must I reorder that particular article?”, “how much can I place forwarding orders quickly, smoothly and efficiently?” will be taken care of. E-logistics application gives direct  access and inventory of data.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Most warehouses are faced with the problem of picking out a particular product from the numerous products in the warehouse. Picking, which is one of the major functions of a warehouse, becomes very difficult when the location of the product is not known. This material gives some possible ways out of this problem.

1.3     OJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1.       To design a program for operating a warehouse.

2.       To manage the stock within the facility

3.       To enable seamless link to order processing and logistics management in order to pick, pack and ship product out of the facility.

4.       To control the movement and storage of materials within a warehouse.

1.4     DEFINITION OF TERMS

          CARGO: this refers to the goods carried in a ship, aircraft or truck.

DOCK:  A dock is an enclosure of water for the loading, unloading and repair of ship.

E-LOGISTICS: this refers to the process which utilizes web technology as an important tool to manage the whole logistics process or some sectors of it. It can also be defined as the transfer of goods and services using internet communication technologies such as electronic data exchange, e-mail and World Wide Web (www). E-logistics = internet + logistics.

FACILITY: a facility is a building or service provided for a particular purpose. Facilities also refer to assets (other than general building) that are built, installed or established to enhance the quality or facilitate the use of land for a particular purpose.

FORWARDING ORDERS: Are orders from an ordering party to a carrier or logistics service provider with respect to the transportation of goods from a shipper to a consignee according to the agreed conditions.

          GOODS: Goods are inherently useful and relatively scarce tangible item (article, commodity, material, wares etc.) produced from agricultural, construction, manufacturing or mining activities. They are things you have obtained in exchange for money.

INTERNET: Is an international computer network providing e-mail and information from computers in educational institutions, government agencies etc. it also refers to a global system of interconnected computer network that use the standard internet protocols.

INVENTORY CONTROL: inventory control is the supervision of the supply, storage and accessibility of items in order to ensure an adequate supply without excessive oversupply. It can also be referred to as a system designed to promote efficiency or assure the implementation of a policy or safeguard assets or avoid fraud and error.

INVENTORY: this simply means the goods and services a business holds in stock. It is a complete list of items such as property, goods in stock or the content of a building

LOGISTICS: Is the planning, execution and control of the movement or placement of goods. It is the management of the flow of resources between the point of origin and the point of destination in order to meet some requirements.

MANAGEMENT: This is the act of getting people together to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively.

PALLETS: A pallet is a portable platform on which goods can be moved, stacked and stored especially with the aid of a forklift.

SOFTWARE: it is a collection of computer programs and related data that provides the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it.

STORAGE: This is he act or method of storing goods or other things for the future use.

SYSTEM: System is a set of things working together as a mechanism. It can also be referred to as an organized scheme or method.

WAREHOUSE: A warehouse is a commercial building for storage of goods. They are usually large buildings in industrial areas, cities and towns.
