ABSTRACT
Mechanic activity areas is one of the major sources of Heavy metals that present great harm to human health even in their low concentrations. Fluted pumpkin (Telfeiria Occidentalis) was collected at rondon from farmlands close to mechanic village Bori in Khana Local Government Areas of Rivers States, and subjected to laboratory analysis of Zn, Fe, and Pb using the A.A.S. The result shows the concentration of heavy metal as that Fe (252.15 Mgkg-1), Zn (56.2 mgkg-1) and Pb (20.1 mgkg-1) concentrations, with the control as 52.47 mgkg-1, 7.34mgkg-1, 2.70mgkg-1. The range of accumulation of heavy metals studied are as follows Fe>Zn>Pb. This concentration were higher than the standard set by WHO and FAO. It is recommended that, fluted pumpkin that is planted close to the mechanic village Bori should not be consumed because it contains some heavy metals which are very hazardous to human healths., Industrial waste should not be dispose on farm lands or close to farms where this fluted pumpkins and other crops are planted and mechanic activity site should not be sited too close to farmlands because they are one of the main sources of heavy metals in the soil.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Toxicity of ingested metals has been an important issue to human health for decades. The relevance of contamination from both natural and anthropogenic sources has increased the concern about the health effects of chronic low-level exposures. Many researchers have shown that some common garden vegetables are capable of accumulating high levels of heavy metal from the soil. (Gacia et al. 1981, Khan and Frankland 1983, Xiong 1998, Cobb et al. 2000). Certain Brassica species (cabbage) are hyper accumulators of heavy metals into the edible tissue of the plant (Xiong 1998). This is an important exposure pathway for people who consume vegetables grown in heavy metal contaminated soil.
Anthropogenic sources of heavy metal contaminated are more lively the cause of the higher and toxic concentrations in soils. Sources may include mining and smelting of ores, electroplating operations, fungicide and pesticides. Sewage and sludge from treatment plants and of fossil (John and Van Laerhoven 1972; Woolson 1973; Boon and Soltanpour 1992; Cobb et al 2000). Certain plant can accumulate heavy metals in their tissue. Uptake is generally increased in plants that are grown in areas with increase soil concentrations. Many people could be at risk of adverse health effects from consuming common garden vegetables cultivated in contaminated soil. Often the condition of garden soil is unknown or undocumented, therefore exposure to toxic level can occur Xu and Thornton (1985) suggest that there are health risks from consuming vegetables with elevated heavy metals concentrations.
This research is designed to evaluate Telfeiria Occidentalis grown at farm lands located close to mechanic activity site.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
It has been observed that Telfeiria Occidentalis grown or cultivated closed to mechanic activity site are at risk of been contaminated with some heavy metals from the soil.
These heavy metals such as fe, pb, cu etc can cause some diseases like Neurigical disorders, CNS destruction and cancers of various organs of the body because the Telfeiria Occidentalis commonly known as Pumpkin vegetables are been consumed by man.
Although the ones that are grown in a non-mechanic activity site or in a non-industrial area. The heavy metals concentrations are low and can be consumed by man.
In order to reduce he heavy metal concentrations in leafy vegetables. There should be a proper experimental test both on the soil and the vegetables grown there in the Laboratory and with the results, it will help us to know the various levels of heavy metals in that soil and he vegetables. This calls for the uptake of some heavy metals by Telfeiria Occidentalis in a mechanic activity site.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
This research work will educate and generate data on the uptake of some heavy metals by Telfeiria Occidentalis, especially from mechanic activities site and its potential effect on human health and will serve as a baseline for research.
1.4 OBJECTIVES
The aim of this research is to determine the uptake of some heavy metals by Telfeiria Occidentalis from a mechanic activity site.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This research work is all about the uptake of some heavy metals by Telfeiria Occidentalis grown close to a mechanic activity site.
