ABSTRACT
This report presents the fabrication of a Metal chair, designed for office use. Several fabrication processes such as welding, grinding, cutting, etc were used to accomplish the task. Mild steel rods of sizes 16mm and 10mm were selected for the fabrication. The chair is covered with form and designed with multi-colour ropes for aesthetics. The fabricated chair offers proper sitting comfort, and also gives an aesthetic out look to the office. It is concluded that welding remains a viable means of joining metallic parts together and that a properly designed and fabricated metal chair can provide comfortable sitting position and facilitate effective discharge of one’s tasks in one’s office.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of study
Furniture refers to movable objects intended to support various human activities such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas), eating (tables), and sleeping (e.g., beds). Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), or to store things (e.g., cupboards and shelves). Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture’s functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. It can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.
However, with the growth of industrial, commercial and household activities the demand of office automation, equipments and steel furniture has increased considerably, Steel furniture is preferred over other kinds of furniture due to its durability, foldability (in many cases) and easy transportability. This project presents the production of steel chair. Steel chairs find extensive use in industrial, commercial and household activities. They are also used by various Government organizations. With the growth of industrial, commercial and household establishments, the demand of steel furniture items has increased considerably. Various Government organizations also procure these items directly or through annual rate contract system. Hence there is a good market potential for above items.
Metal furniture is a type of furniture that uses metal parts in its construction. There are various types of metal that can be used such as iron, aluminum and stainless steel. Iron and steel products are extensively used in many applications, ranging from office furnishings to outdoor setting.
A metallic couch is a piece of furniture with a raised surfaced supported by legs commonly used for sitting by many persons. Chairs are supported most often by four or more legs and have a back. However, they can have a different shape and varied number of legs.
Chairs are made of a wide variety of materials, ranging from wood to metal to synthetic material (e.g plastic) and they may be padded or upholstered in various colors and fabrics either just on the seat (as with some dining room chair) or on the entire chair. The metallic chair can be used in living rooms, schools, officers and in various other workplaces.
Metallic couch or chair can also serve the following purposes;
For sitting,
For relaxation
For sleeping.
Metal chairs should meet certain requirements:
- provide a certain level of sitting comfort;
- durable;
- comply with the overall style of home and environment;
- look aesthetically pleasing.
Depending on the construction type there are the following chair types:
- Mobile chairs;
- Sliding chairs;
- Swinging chairs.
- Adjustable chairs
- Foldable chairs
1.2 Statement of the problem
Muscle and spine disorders are two of the top ranking causes of inability to work in offices and homes. The long-term duration of these complaints means they cause about one third of all lost working days. These health problems are often caused by incorrect, improper or neglected sitting position after long term sitting. Hence, durable, functional, comfortable and adaptable seating is essential for specialized workplaces. This will help curb the problems of improper and uncomfortable sitting. To this end, the fabrication of the durable, comfortable and affordable metal chair presented in the report becomes very important and a necessity.
1.3 Aim and objectives of the study
The aim of this project is to fabricate a metal chair/couch from available materials that will stand the test of time for office use. To achieve this, the following are the objectives;
To produce a durable chair for office or home use.
To produce a chair that can be easily moved from one place to another.
To produce a chair that wouldn’t require bolts, screws or other fasteners susceptible to breakdown.
To show that metal chairs can be produced in wide range.
To produce a chair that is less capital intensive.
To produce a chair that is pest resistant, corrosion resistant and cannot scratch or damage.
To apply electric arc welding technique as a metal joining process
To provide aesthetics to a offices and homes
1.4 Significance of the study
The significance of this project is two-fold. The first is, to provide proper sitting position and comfort in offices and homes so as to reduce the incessant rate of disorder associated with wrong sitting positions. The other is to provide aesthetics to the offices and homes. To this end, this project is relevant to industries, business ventures, homes, etc as it provide comfort and aesthetics.
1.5 Scope of the study
The scope of this project is limited to the fabrication of a metal chair, using electric arc welding process as the joining process. Hence, structural design evaluations and consideration and other metal joining processes such as bolting, screwing, etc are not taken into account. Also the possible fabrication techniques of other types of chairs are not presented.
