ANALYSIS OF MOBILE NETWORK SIGNAL STRENGHT FOR GSM NETWORKS IN BORI
ABSTRACT
This work comprises the comparative study of the signal strength of four cellular network providers (MTN, Glo,
Etisalat and Airtel) in Bori metropolis. Due to poor network, most customers could not derive maximum satisfaction for their money. This work is aimed at analyzing and providing better understanding concerning the signal strength to improve on their performance. A software application was installed into a smart phone. The four base station were located, and with the aid of the smart phone, their various signal strength were recorded at about 100 metre intervals for each network. It was observed that Glo had the best signal strength of -175dBm at a distance of 700m followed by MTN and Airtel, while Etisalat became the least. It is recommended that constant evaluation of the various network signal strength be carried out in order to connect any deviation from the standard and satisfied customers maximum utility.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
With the technological improvements, communication has gained an increasing role in human daily life than before. These improvement have resulted in development and presentation of many new generation communication devices, mobile communication system; especially mobile phone have become the most common tool of communication and an indispensable part of our daily lives over recent years. The era of GSM network services in Nigeria started in August 2001 (Hassan et al., 2009). Today it is the most widely used cellular mode of communication in Nigeria, the service has been successful for a variety of reasons which include portable service while on the more and roaming capacities. Due to this device there have serious competition among the various network provider and as a result, several base station had been erected by service provider all over the country to provide better service to their various customers. This device had given opportunity to even people leaving in the rural area to have access to these networks. However, we have encountered other challenges in terms of quality of service provided by these network providers, which has become the reasons for these work. The mobile phone signal popularly known as “service” is the signal strength measure in DBM received by a mobile phone from a cellular network. This work comprises the study of four (4) different networks (MTN, GLO, ETISALAT and AIRTEL) in Bori metropolis and determining their signal strength.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Despite all the aforementioned advantages of GSM, it has some challenges that make it difficult to access for the emerging application especially poor network. These challenges had made most customers not to have values for their patronage (money) and sometimes are disappointed.
1.3 AIM/OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
The aim of this work is to analyze and provide better understanding to the various GSM signal network in Bori metropolis for performance improvement.
Other objectives include:
To know the received signal strength of GSM networks.
To compare the strength difference of GSM network.
To identify the average signal from different base station.
To know the best signal with the most optimal performance.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
It is hoped that this work is useful for a given idea or clue to the performance of GSM provider in Bori metropolis and to also know the best Received Signal Strength (RSS) values available in Bori for better reception and experience.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this work is limited to the analysis of signal strength for mobile network in Bori.
The studies of GSM signal strength are very general. The overall work of this paper will only include the measurement of signal strength for four different network provider (MTN, GLO, ETISALAT and AIRTEL) with respect to their distance by using 3G (third generation) network. The data is collected by performing physical measurement.
1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
This work is to examine the variation between the received signal strength in respect to their distance from the base station for four (4) cellular system providers (MTN, GLO, ETISALAT and AIRTEL) in Bori.
1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS
Arbitrary Strength Unit (ASU): this is defined as an integer value proportional to the received signal strength measured by the mobile phone.
Base Station: It is a mobile network transmitter-received station to which mobile phones or other terminal device is connected.
Call Set up Success Rate (CSSR): This is the fraction of the attempts to make a call that result in a connection to the dialed number.
Drop Call: this is a common technology used and expressed by wireless mobile phone call subscribers is abruptly cut-off (disconnected) during mid-conversation.
General packet Radio Service (GPRS): It is a service/technology introduced in GSM to enable an efficient transmission and reception of data.
Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM): is a digital mobile telephony system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world.
Key Performance Indicator (KPI): is a measurable value that demonstrates how effectively a company is achieving key business objective.
Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI): is a measurement of the power present in a received radio signal.
Signal Strength: This is define as received signal strength indicator (RSSI).
Quality of Service (QoS): this is defined as a set of specific requirement provided by a network necessary to achieve the required functionality of service.
