EMPLOYEES MOTIVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY IN THE NIGERIAN BREWERIES INDUSTRY (A CASE STUDY OF PABOD BREWERIES)

ABSTRACT
This research has examined employee motivation and productivity of Nigerian Breweries industries with special reference to Pabod Breweries. The main objective of the study is to examine employee motivation and productivity. The specific objectives are to investigate the impact of motivation on productivity based on staff perception in Pabod Breweries, to find out how increase in salary, wages and other financial benefits could make employees happier with their jobs and hence make them perform better, to study strategies which will assist the employers in motivating employees, to study how non-financial benefits such as praise, letter of commendation, off duties for work well done motivate employees, to find out if the provision of employees welfare package enhance job satisfaction. The population of this study is made of entrepreneurs in Rivers State. The researcher draws a sample size of one hundred (100) respondents using non probability sampling technique. The target population of interest of the researcher is some selected entrepreneurs in Rivers state. Convenience sampling procedure was adopted for easy accessibility and courage of the sample size. Target population is (100). It is expected that these sample units will provide the required data. The Yaro Yemen’s formula was used to determine the sample size of 80 and the analyses was based on it. The study found out that increase in salary, wages motivate, and that regular promotion enhance employee job performance and that provision of employee welfare packages enhance job satisfaction. Based on the findings of the study summary conclusion and recommendations were made that financial gap between the management staff and other categories of staff is rather staggering; it is therefore advisable for the top management to encourage these other cadre of staff by improving their general condition of service, are so, the private sector establishments should be encouraged to adopt more positive motivational strategies in order to align themselves with the best practices, the researcher is of the view that more positive strategies will bring about more productivity in the company than the ones presently practiced, organizations should work out and make such policies and organizational structures that support employee recognition and empowerment, the government should set up employment policy and condition of services for the private sector as obtainable in the public sector. These policies should gear towards curtailing the inhuman treatment that the private sector employees suffer.
