CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1          Background of Study

A bed could be defined as a piece of furniture for sleep or rest typically a framework with a mattress (wikipedia).

Early beds were little more than piles of straw or some other natural material (e.g a heap of palm leaves, animal skin or dried braken). As technology increased from folding beds in the 12th century to feather beds in the 14th century, the evolution of wood work was enhanced from the 19th century till date, the idea of using different materials to construct bed came into existence. The type of bed used presently is the platform bed. Various types of bed have evolved ever since. This conclude: a box-bed, brass bed, bunk bed, loft bed, canopy bed, futon, day bed, hammock, hospital bed, iron bed, infant bed, rope bed, roll-away bed, sofa bed, state bed, toddler bed, trundled bed, vibrating, water bed, Murphy bed, camp bed.

1.2.         Objectives of Study

The objectives of this study include:

  1. To know how to construct a resting bed
  2. To identify the different types of wood used in the construction of bed.

iii.            To identify the different types of bed

  1. To identify the different types of joints in a bed.

1.3. Scope of Study

The Scope of the Study includes:

  1. To construct a resting bed
  2. To select the necessary woods that can be used in the construction of resting bed.

iii.            To make use of the necessary equipment and tools used in construction of resting bed.

1.4.         Significance of the Study

The Significance of the study includes:

  1. To provide a good knowledge on the construction of a resting bed.
  2. Provide an opportunity for further studies on resting bed and wood work related projects

iii.            Reveal the techniques for the construction of resting bed.
