ABSTRACT
A biochemical analysis of the use of garlic and treatment of the halitosis that accompanies the consumption of garlic was carried out using guinea pigs as case study. The natural weight and glucose level of the intravenously collected blood of nine (9) guinea pigs were checked using a weighing balance and glucometer respectively. After a week interval the weight was found to have reduced due to change of environment; but improved after 3 weeks. Intravenous induction of streptozotocin was done to increase the blood glucose level in the guinea pigs; not only did the blood glucose level increase but there is also a show of excitation and restlessness in the guinea pigs. Garlic extract was inoculated intravenously into the guinea pigs using a sterile syringe and the result showed that garlic is naturally anti-diabetic and can be used to manage diabetes. Lemon juice was administered on the guinea pigs to check the garlic breath odor resulting from the feed of garlic on them, and it proved positive that lemon juice alone or in combination with moringa oil and/or milk has the potency to cease the halitosis from the consumption of raw garlic or its extract. Further study regarding uses of garlic should be done by Medical Research Institutes to determine the formulation necessary for the management of diabetes and also for the necessary treatment of garlic breath odor using lemon juice.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
Garlic is called “the stinking rose” for good reason but unfortunately, many people shy away from too much garlic, because of its bad breath. It’s the allicin in garlic, and the four compounds it breaks down into, that give garlic its stench. The worst offender is allyl methyl sulfide, which not only causes bad breath but can also add a unique lingering odor to your sweat and urine (NPR, 2014).
The good news is that the smell of garlic goes away once you metabolize the smelly compounds. The bad news is that it can take up to two days for this to happen.
If you develop a socially offensive odor, try decreasing the amount of garlic you’re consuming until there is no odor present. Eating parsley can also help you to get rid of garlic breath, citrus and Milk may help to mask it. If you drink milk, one study also found that it “may help reduce the malodorous odor in breath after garlic ingestion and mask the garlic flavor during eating” (JFS, 2010).
Allicin is produced in garlic cells when they are damaged, which is why garlic’s scent is most potent once it is being cut or cooked. It is believed that alliin and alliinase are kept in separate compartments of the cells and can only combine once these compartments have been ruptured.
It is suggested that the citric Acid content in citrus can subside the garlic breath odour resulting from the consumption of raw garlic (which contains the stinking agent, Allicin).
1.2 PURPOSE OF STUDY
This study is designed to dilute and erase the stinking smell of the garlic breath odour using citric juice and milk. The prescription of citric juice and milk is base on the citric acid content of the juice, assumed to result in a neutral odour when reacted with allicin, the cause of stink.
1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
The many good medical (antibacterial and antiviral) benefits of garlic as an unrefined medication are forbidden by patients who abhor the accompanying long-lasting stinking odour of the fruit.
This study will provide a remedy to the stink caused by allicin in raw garlic consumption.
1.4 SCOPE OF STUDY
The study is designed to treat the garlic breath odour from a garlic feed animal with a citric acid containing juice and milk, using guinea pig a case study. The study will be carried out in the Biochemical laboratory of Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori.
