INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Generally, Digitization is a broad term spanning the media industry including the prints and the electronic media. It is the representation of an object, image, sound, document, or a signal usually an analog signal by a discreet set of its points or sample the result of these processes are digital representation, digital image for an object and digital form for a signal. To a Mass Communicator author and expert, McQuail (2000:28) the process of digitization having immense significance to the computing ideals as it “allows information of all kinds in all formats to be carried with the same efficiency and also intermingled” By inference therefore, digitization for the broadcasting media will enhance audio and visual quality.

In another breath, Digitalization also means an enhanced viewers experience through for instance: Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), sub-titling, additional language options, and interactive services such as weather and news reports (Wikipedia 2013). Nancy Hicks Maynard (2010) described digitalization as “a mega media”, whereby the much about the ways we define, gather and produce news will have to change.

1.2     STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The digitalization of the broadcast media in today’s word of communication and news stories gathering and reporting, especially in the Broadcast media cannot be over looked. Since its arrival, digitalizations of broadcast media have certainly changed the way Broadcast media work, how stories are developed and disseminated. Digitalization of broadcast media have had positive impacts, without doubt, but there are also concerns about its impact on productivity and the disruption it could have on Broadcast media “working patterns. Digitalization of broadcast media have created a dependency among those working in the media and many have are unable to do without them.

Digitalization of broadcast media have become journalistic working strength and it seems sourcing information has overtaken self-promotion as a primary digitalization of broadcast activity. While Broadcast media are growing more so Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) Masticated in their use of digitalization of broadcast media, and are for instance, using a great variety of tools to source for news, some Broadcast media are less positive about some of the ways digitalization of broadcast media affect their journalistic activities, their engagement with their audience, their productivity and the quality of their work. Based on these contrasting views, the question this research seeks to answer is; how has digitalization of broadcast media affected the Broadcast media in Channel TV with regards to their journalistic duties?

  3. To find out the type of digitalization of broadcast media tools Broadcast media in Channel TV prefer.
  4. To determine whether digitalization of broadcast media have enhanced the productivity of Broadcast media in Channel TV.

1.4      RESEARCH QUESTIONS

  1. What are the Broadcast media perceptions of digitalization of the media?
  2. Are Broadcast media in Rivers State exposed to digitalization of the media?
  3. What type of digitalization of broadcast media tool do Broadcast media in Rivers State prefer?
  4. How have digitalization of broadcast media enhanced the productivity of Broadcast media in Rivers State?

1.5     SCOPE OF THE STUDY/DE LIMITATION

This study is focused on Channel TV and not necessarily conclusive for Broadcast media in other parts of Nigeria. Since Broadcast media share common characteristics and skills, data generated from this study at result obtained thereof, can be applied to all Broadcast media

A wide research of this nature cannot be carried out without some constrains, this constrains pose a lot of limitations to this work.

Time: Duration for the research work is relatively short while stress emanated from other academic activities is also another constrain.

Material: Little materials are also available because the work is relatively new. Financial: Financial constrain poses another challenges as most of information are gathered through newspapers
