ABSTRACT

Despite the volume of research the impact of Mass Media in crime reduction  in Rivers State of Nigeria which have received little attention. The study addressed various issues in crime reporting identifying the communities that have low rate of crime, content analysis communities, Romuokwurus, Nbegilaru and Rumuogba which were covered in there months May, June and July content analysis were a low used in analyzing data gathered. The following showed that crime stories was giving more attention during the course  of this research. The chapter conclude that there is need for mass media have official editorial policy and to report crime as epidemics.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

This project is critically aimed at analyzing the impacts of mass media in crime reduction in Rivers State of Nigeria and how it is been reported by the mass media.

However crime has been a thing that has been raveging many societies daily, never a day passes by without one crime or the other.

Human society is fraught with stories of grieve unwholesome acts meted out by people or group of people(s), such distasteful act leads to damages in victims. And damages always cry out for repair. There are some system instituted by every society to redress gravely unjust acts. Many societies codify, such acts broadly as crime.

Reporting crime in Rivers State have been reduced consequently, Rivers State (Obio/Akpor) now see read and hear how crime have been solved, not see, read and hear stories of people being attacked, owners of property killed or injured etc. Even government officials being involved in corruption practice, the mass media comes between relationships among people in the society as regard to crime, the reporter’s interest less in forming the public on all aspect of crime in Rivers State (Obio/Akpor).

1.1 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Considering the impact of mass media in crime reduction in Obio/Akpor Local Government Areas of Rivers State of Nigeria, their need for equitable and accuracy in reporting crime stories in order to create fill awareness to the society at large. Crime is now a bone in the neck because, it have been part of human existence. Mass media reveals things to the public to know the growth of the soecity can also lead to the reduction of crime in Obio/Akpor.

What is important is man’s ability to resolve crime for socio-economic political and cultural development of the society.

In today’s world most of what man know is attributable to the media considering the fact that international convention such as the united nation convention on human and people’s right and the Nigeria legal system places great responsibility on the press in focus when issues relating to crime are being discussed it is in the light of this that the study intended  to examine in comparative terms, how the mass media covers crime, it doesn’t need just the audience but also to sanitize people about crime through their objective and know how to relate these objectives and goals with respect to a negative effects to their business, hence this will call for collection motion for both government and individual to look for a equitable solution to cross the high level of crime rate in the country.

1.2 PURPOSE OF STUDY

The major aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of mass media in crime reduction in Rivers State of Nigeria by Nigerian press with a view of coming up with a comprehensive information on the  impact of mass media in crime reduction. However, the objective of the study include.

  1. To ascertain the extent of mass media impact in crime reduction in Obio/Akpor by the press.
  2. To find out how ownership and control, impact or influence crime reduction.
  3. To find out whether this ownership play any significant role in this study by the press.
  4. To find out how these reports have impacted on rime negatively or positively.

2.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

In carrying out these study the researcher should be guided by the following questions.

  1. What prompt prominence attention to crime reduction in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area?
  2. What are the hopes for crime victims?
  3. What constitutes crime stories?

SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The importance of this project if taken seriously will reveal many things to the society and also will in a way poise the private and government owned media houses to collectively derive on an equitable and alternative measured in order to arrive at a common conclusion which will reduce the rate of crime.

This research is also important to the communities or society in which the mass media operate for instance, if organization or media organization fails play their roles to community, the communities involved might become hostile to the organization and could even damage or loot the organization properties.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study is aimed at investigating the impact of the mass media in crime reduction in Rivers State of Nigeria (Obio/Akpor). Through the aims and objectives of the researcher is to discover the impact of mass media in Obio/Akpor Local Government  Area, this study go further  to bring into focus some of the impact of mass media in crime reduction.

1.4 LIMITATION OF STUDY

On the research exercise there were myriad of hindrance which impinge the conduct or going out about the exercise. Also the weather is not very convenience for the exercise since it rains to hinder movement from one place to another for inquiry.

Another fact is cost of transportation and printing, this is another set back from getting to sources of materials and for collections of data.

1.5 DEFINITIO OF TERMS

  1. Mass media: These are various channels by which information is being disseminated to the public.
  2. Reduction: An act of making something less or smaller, the state of being made less or small.
  3. Impact: The powerful effect that somebody or something has on something.
  4. Fraught: Something filled with something unpleasant.
  5. Crime: It is an activity that involves breaking the law.
