ABSTRACT

The study to investigate effective leadership and employee productivity practiced in an organization. The purpose of this study is to understand the effect of different leadership style autocratic, democratic, and participative style on employee productivity. The objective that guide the study were; to investigate the effect of autocratic leadership style affect employee productivity to investigate them of democratic leadership style on performance in an organization. The study follow the qualitative approaches, secondary research will be integrated. The reason for this is to be able to provide adequate discussion for the different variable that will help them understand more about the issue and the reader that will involves with it. On the other hand, sources in secondary research will include previous research report, magazine and journal content. Existing finding on journal and existing knowledge on book will be used as secondary research. The interpretation will be conducted which can account as qualitative in nature. To validate the research objective different scholarly views are presented of each independent variable effect on the dependent variable. At the end, it was conclude that the autocratic leadership is useful in all time horizon. And participation leadership style is most useful in long term and effect on employee is positive. And some recommendation are discussed.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

In the recent past year, leadership engaged as new effective approach for managing the employee and organization at large. Research in the west has shown that job satisfaction, productivity and organizational commitment are affected by leadership behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of leadership on employee outcome or productivity very little research related to this subject has been done in health care setting in the country. The comparison of result of the different type of setting and samples will allow a better understanding of the relationship between behaviors and employee productivity or outcome and thus help to determine if leadership is worth extra effort.

Employee productivity (sometimes referred to as workforce. Productivity is an assessment of the efficiency of a worker or group of workers). Productivity may be evaluated in terms of the output of an employee in a specific period of time.

The traditional concept of personnel as gradually replaced with the human resources management. This gives importance to the strategic integration of new leadership into management of employees and to improve the employee productivity.  Different leadership style are used that fit to employees on the basis of amount of directions, empowerment, and decision making power. An administrative phenomenon reflects the contingency of leadership, and style, situation and performance criteria have been left to suffocate on their own. As a result, employee productivity was affected due to lack of proper direction and application of strategic style in managing daily duties. The previous study investigates productivity phenomena and how it was affected by various variable such as: leadership and with its different leadership style such as participative, autocratic, and democratic. It was noted that, in most studies, the concept of participative approach was highly lacking yet in the data collected, it was noted that this approach was critical to the sustainable of leadership processes especially in large work environment.

The history of leadership and how it affects productivity of employee’s data as back as early as the 17th century (2) where towards and end of that century we stated noticing a shift from human as machines and rather see them as human capital necessary for the achievements of different of works tasks.

The three leadership style taken as independent variable and employee productivity were taken as dependent variable. Consequently, productivity was operationally perceived as; executing duties, meeting deadlines, team input and achieving departmental goals. The above should lead to efficiency, specialization, effective feedback and good organization relations.

Leadership are ability to employ. Managerial competencies to organized performance processes by inspiring, igniting and motivating teams to meet a set organization goals.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Various organization needs strong and effective leadership style that stimulate the employee productivity. Some organization such as Del Waste Management Ltd. Face the problem; poor innovation, low productivity, inability to meet productivity targets. This problem happens due to lack of strategic intervention of specific leadership style to the particular situation was predicted as the problem at hand, This problem was continuously affecting employee productivity that is why this study was to investigate effective leadership and employees productivity in Del Waste Management Ltd, Port Harcourt.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The research in testing the effectiveness of a leadership is fueled by the objectives.

A research without purpose is worthless and part of the aims is to introduce the best leadership approach.

  1. To explore leadership style that contribute to employee productivity.
  2. To explain the relationship between the effective leadership style and employee productivity.
  3. To know the significance of leadership among employee productivity.
  4. To develop the model that shows relation among different styles of leadership and employee productivity.

  1. What is the relationship between participative leadership ad employee productivity in Del Waste Management Ltd?
  2. What is the relationship between the democratic leadership style and employee productivity in Del waste Management ltd?
  3. To what extend does the authoritative style affect employee productivity in Del Waste Management Ltd?
  4. Is Laissez-faire leadership creating an optimistic effect on the productivity of employee in Del Waste Management Ltd?
  5. Is emotional intelligence of leaders having a boosting impact on employee’s productivity in Del Waste Management Ltd?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

As such, the completion of this dissertation will provide understanding of the concept present so as generate data and information that every planner could use in order to come up with strategies, plans, and designs that will strategically position them in the highly competitive diverse, and complex business environment that is experiences at present.

By fulfilling the aims that were stated in the objective section, this study will be helpful for other researchers who may be focusing on understanding the concept of effective leadership.

The notable significance of this study is the possibility that other researchers may be able to use finding in this studies for future studies that will create a huge impact on society. This finding can be used for other finding that might prove to be helpful in introducing changes to the business.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The content scope focused on exploring, how participative leadership, authoritative Laissez-faire leadership and Democratic leadership, style stimulated the employee’s productivity. The geographical scope is Del Waste Management Ltd, Port Harcourt.

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research encounter a limitation in regard to availability of information. Thus, due to the organization working ethics, the researchers could not get access to vital information since it was treated as confidential and the target respondents number was not attainted, since some employee were on leave inadequate funds and availability of time also become a limitation.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

LEADERSHIP: The process of directing and inspiring employee to perform tasks and oriented activities in an organization.

ORGANIZATION: Are artificial contrived structure with procedure and objective defining the responsibilities and highlighting who does a type of job task.

PRODUCTIVITY: The act of carry out an action or a piece of work.

AUTOCRATIC: Is a process of proving strong motivation and satisfaction to the leaders who dictate term.

DEMOCRATIC STYLE: As way by which a leader decentralize and delegate high authority to do his subordinates.

PARTICIPATIVE: It is a style of leadership in which the leader involves employee in goal setting problem solving, team building etc. but remains the final decision making authority.

EFFECTIVITY: These adjective means producing or capable of producing a desired effect: an effective reprimand; effectual complaint. Power to be effective? The quality of being about an effect.

EMPLOYEE: An individual who works part-time or full-time under a contract of employment, whether oral or written, express or implied, and has recognized right and duties. Also, called workers.

LAISSZ-FAIR LEADERSHIP: This describe those leaders who leave their employee to work on their own without any supervision.
