CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Motivation is concerned with why people do what they do. It answers such questions as why do managers or workers get to work and do a good job. This tries to explain what motivates people to act the way they do. With primary focus on the work place. It is the primary task of the manager to create and maintain an environment in which employees can work effectively and efficiently to realize the objectives of the organization.

Employees differ not only in their ability to work but also in their will to do so (motivation). To motivate is to induce persuade, stimulate, even compel, an employee to act in a manner which fulfills the objectives of an organization. The motivation of employees depends on the strength of their motives. Motives are needs, wants, drives or impulses within the individual and these determine human behaviour.

Motivation them involves the process of arousing behaviour, sustaining behaviour in progress, and changing behaviour into a specific course of action. Thus, motives (needs, desires) induce employees to act motivation therefore is the inner state that energies, channels and sustains human behaviour.

Since it has been established that will behaviour except involving responses goals directed, managers can apply motivational theories of management in their attempt to direct the job behaviour of employees towards the goal of their establishment.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Employee motivation has always been a central problem for leaders and mangers. Unmotivated employees are likely to spend little or no effort in their jobs, avoid the workplace as much as possible, exit the organization if given the opportunity and produce low quality work. On the other hand, employees who feel motivated to work are likely to be persistent, creative and productive, turning out high quality work that they willingly undertake. There has been a lot of research done on motivation by many scholars, but the behaviour of groups of people to try to find out why it is that every employee of a company does not perform at their best has been comparatively unresearched. Many things can be said to answer this question, the reality is that every employee has different ways to become motivated. Employers need to get to know their employees very well and use different tactics to motivate each of them based on their personal wants and needs.

The inherent problem I have identified is that many employers have attempted several different incentives programs to motivate their employees, yet they have not worked for everyone in the company. This is a major problem faced by employers these days, due to the fact that each employer’s company is founded on the strength of its employee’s performance.

Lastly, the fund constraint in carrying out this research work, the cost of getting adequate material and information as well as their desirable quantity will also constitute the limitation of the study.
