ABSTRACT

Desktop Optimization software is a dynamic desktop solution available to Software Assurance customers, which reduces application deployment costs, enables delivery of applications as services, and allows for better management and control of enterprise desktop environments. It helps reduce the TCO (Total cost of ownership) of the entire Windows desktop life cycle by accelerating OS and application management, and enhancing IT responsiveness and end-user uptime.  The system uses Visual Basic. Net which is a object oriented high level programming language developed by Microsoft for software developers. The objective of this study is to build interface  for users to view and manage a desktop and to enable users arrange their icons and folders using a shortcut to access folders and edit files and also we were able to gather from other related literature review and we strictly follow Structure system analysis and design methodology in this research. Data were gathered from internet, questionnaires and interview. The system was able to manage window features and deliver organizations a range of powerful capabilities that simplify desktop deployment and management, improve security and compliance, and provide access to applications and data from anywhere.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Recent Desktop optimization systems have demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of using a software system to optimize a program while it is executing. The ability of adapting a running to its changing environment provides a promising new approach to overcome many of the obstacles of traditional static compilation. Desktop optimization is the process of modifying a software system to make some aspect of it work more efficiently or use fewer resources.  In general, a computer program may be optimized so that it executes more rapidly, or is capable of operating with less memory storage or other resources, or draw less power.

Desktop Optimization (DO) is a program designed to help IT professionals virtualized the user experience, applications, and Windows; manage features within Windows; and restore user productivity after a system issue. Although the word “optimization” shares the same root as “optimal”, it is rare for the process of optimization to produce a truly optimal system. The optimized system will typically only be optimal in one application or for one audience. One might reduce the amount of time that a program takes to perform some task at the price of making it consume more memory. In an application where memory space is at a premium, one might deliberately choose a slower algorithm in order to use less memory. Often there is no one size fits all design which works well in all cases, so engineers make trade-offs to optimize the attributes of greatest interest. Additionally, the effort required to make a piece of software completely optimal incapable of any further improvement  is almost always more than is reasonable for the benefits that would be accrued; so the process of optimization may be halted before a completely optimal solution has been reached.

1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The objectives of this research are listed below;

  1. a) To build and interface for user to view and manage the desktop
  2. b) Enable user arrange Icon, Folders, shortcut and other files on the desktop
  3. c) Provide a work space on the desktop

1.3 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

There are a lot of benefits derivable from this research. The research and the reader will be able to differentiate between desktop, desktop environment, and desktop manager. Also, we discuss how Desktop optimizer can help the user to easily access and edit files,

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

There need to have program that can enable user make effective use of desktop window. Before now many desktop optimization program have been developed but are made for a particular operation system eg, MDOP 2008, MDOP 2008 R2, MDOP 2009        . MDOP 2009 R2, MDOP 2010 and etc. these software were developed for windows operating system, thus the need to develop one that will be platform independent is needed.

1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The work is not limit to the computer desktop window environment only. There are other areas where optimization software is being applicable like medical image processing, and financial engineering.

1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Desktop: In reference to software, desktop refers to the desktop environment, which is a Graphical User Interface metaphor that allows for interaction between the user and the operating system. Also, is a system of organization of icons, folders and files on a screen.

Desktop environment (DE): Is an implementation of the desktop metaphor made of a bundle of programs running on top of a computer operating system, which share a common graphical user interface (GUI), sometimes described as a graphical shell.

Desktop Optimization system: These are programs designed to help IT professionals virtualized the user experience, applications, and Windows; manage features within Windows; and restore user productivity after a system issue.
