ABSTRACT.

Everyone, every house and every organization surely needs lighting due to the state of epileptic power supply in the country. This project, Sensor Rechargeable Lantern has been made in order not to only tackle lighting as the case may be, but to also tackle what most ordinary LEDs lantern can’t accomplish, i.e. emergency lantern, whereby it automatically switches on itself. It can be operated either manually or automatically (sensor). Manually, when needed urgently for a particular purpose when there is still light. Automatically, when it should sense darkness in order to switch on. Since, the sensor resistance is low during day time, this keeps the circuit from switching on the lamp, but the moment the sensor senses darkness, the resistance becomes so high, thereby short circuiting the circuit, and the lamp comes on due to the effect of the op amp. The objective of this project is to construct a cheap, versatile and efficient sensor rechargeable lantern which can be charged with the limited available power supply, and which can be used for a minimum of three hours due to the battery capability, 12V, and 7.2AH. It is recommended that for further research, a switch mode power supply should be used in order to reduce the mass weight of the project.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0  INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND

Lighting is crucially needed by almost everyone in the world today for day to day activities. Alternative means of lighting have been researched upon and developed over the years due to inadequate generation of power supply. One of these alternative means is the “rechargeable lantern”. It is widely used in homes, schools, camps, hospitals, shops, markets and among other organizations today. In Nigeria and the world at large, with load shedding due to inadequate generation of power supply, a rechargeable lantern’s battery can be fully charged within 2-4 hours, which is more considerate, and to be used during the night for hours depending on the rate and capacity of the battery being used. Rechargeable lanterns are said to be in good position to complement the status of power supply in the country and the world at large today. This research work focuses on the design of sensor rechargeable lantern that automatically switches on the lantern when there is outage during the night.

1.2   PROBLEM STATEMENT

One of the major problems of constructing a sensor rechargeable lantern is the inability of illiterate user to quickly understand the technique of its function. After research on Nigeria market, finding competitors that would accurately fit within the design couldn’t be found. The major shortfall of the available ones in the market is their inflexibility to be able to automatically switch on when there is outage. This project can be powered with the use of AC, and also solar (Photovoltaic). Therefore, contribution to the construction of rechargeable lanterns in terms of versatility was achieved.

1.3   OBJECTIVE

The objective of this project is to design and construct a cheap, versatile and efficient sensor rechargeable lantern which can be charged with the limited available power supply, and which is being used by the students on campus to be able to read their books, do their assignments, and perform all other academic activities.

1.4   SCOPE

The research work is limited to the design and construction of a sensor rechargeable lantern, with charger that charges the battery at a faster rate, and capable of converting AC to DC with the use of rectifier.

1.5   SIGNIFICANCE.

The significance of this research is the provision of an alternative means of providing the economy with lighting system, for students on campus, and also for the nation, and the world at large. It also helps to complement the inadequate generation of power supply. The research work also serve as a reference material to related subject matter in an academic environment.
