ABSTRACT

The use of interlocking concrete blocks pavers has gained rapid popularity in many countries. Interlocking bricks required no skilled labour and can be moulded in any shape and size depending on the requirements. These bricks have better tolerances and on efflorescence as compared to conventional bricks. Interlocking bricks have no consumption of mortars, better efficiency in laying and low cost of finishing. Thus, the purpose of this study is to construct interlocking concrete pavement in the department of mechanical. Relevant literatures were reviewed on the subject matter. The parking lot was constructed using interlocking paving stone in form of rigid pavement which measured the total area of 400m2 inside Mechanical Engineering Department. An experimental effort was made to determine the strength of this brick. This brick were cure for 7, 14 and 21days. At 7days the strength of this brick was Total= 77052.61N/m2, at 14days was Total = 85211.12N/m2, and for 21days it was= 102190.82N/m2. It was found that strength of interlocking bricks increases with the days. The car parking area was secured with kerbs to keep the paving interlocking stone in place, and also for the protection of erosion at the edges of the interlocking stone and cracks.

INTRODUCTION

1.1   Background of study

Mechanical engineering is a unique discipline that seeks to add aesthetic value to the environment using some ceramic materials. for construction of road and proper provision of car parking space. Parking space has been created over the years, resulting to the reduction or elimination of road congestion that can possibly cause road accident or road hazard.

According to Nzidee Leleesi, accident can be defined as a sudden or unexpected occurrence of the cause of activity which causes or could cause harm or injury to the workforce, damage to property or impact on the environment. Taylor et al (2004).  The car park which is also known as parking lot (or car lot), is a cleared area that is intended for the parking of vehicles. This term refers to a dedicated area that has been provided with a durable or semi-durable surface. In some cases, parking lot tend to be a source of pollution because of their extensive impervious surfaces.

In most countries, proper allocation of parking lot is done with designated site or area for different set of peoples such as disabled persons, aged persons. The Department of Mechanical engineering, school of engineering has decided to create parking space around its administrative block to reduce the parking along the road. The construction of the parking lot has been designed in an I-Shape within the environment of Mechanical engineering department, with the aid of required standard of stone such as interlocking stone, and kerb (or curb) stone. Interlocking is something that is firmly joined together, especially by one-part fitting into another. It can be seen as an arrangement of signal apparatus that prevent the conflicting movements through an arrangement of tracks such as junctions or crossing. From the Mechanical engineering perspective curb or kerb can be defined as a hard stone like granite or good-quality precast concrete used for bordering a road and limiting the footway. Broussard, S.L. (2007); Berry, D (2005); Plotkin, H. (2002); David, A.W. (2003); Ermert, Moruk (2004);Lessig, L (2004).

1.2   Statement of problem

Appropriate allocation/ designation of where cars are to be parked have been provided to reduce possibility of potential hazard or accident. The Mechanical engineering seeks to create a conductive area for students and staff in order for staff to park their cars and students to move freely in the absence of possibility of accident. Blocking of road due to on-street parking without traffic personnel which is in existence can make the road uncomfortable during an official and lecture hour as both staff and students found it so difficult to get a conductive parking space.

The problem staff and students have in Mechanical Engineering is lack of car park which leads to on-street parking, which can result to accident. 1.3   Objectives of study

The main objectives of this study are as follows:

  1. To construct a parking lot which will serve for the purpose of reducing the possibility of potential hazard or accident.
  2. To add aesthetic value to the environment with the aid of flowers and Bahama grass for beautification.

1.4   Significance of study

This study is very important because it has seen the effect of lack of car park. The work carried out in this study is enormous and beneficial to the staff and students in term of provision of car park and knowledge acquisition respectively.

Additionally, its importance goes across reduction of on-street parking especially within the Mechanical Engineering Departmental office which is on a curved section of the campus street, by this possibility of potential accident or hazard will be reduced as well as providing a paved area within the Mechanical Engineering Department for the removal of water log and the provision of flowers for beautification.

1.5   Justification of study

Mechanical engineering profession seeks to optimize the operation/manipulate the environment so as to reduce possibility of potential hazards or accidents to the environment and to the workers in that environment. Accident retards the program of the development in any given area. This work will definitely help in control of such potential accidents by instituting a form of arrangement or orderliness in the department and will overall reduce the economic loss being faced by these series of occasional accident that occur.
